Difference Between Cable Packaging: Hardwood Reels, Plywood + More!

When it comes to types of packaging for wire rope and cable products, there are a wide variety of shipping and packaging options available. In today’s blog we will provide some key differences between coils, plastic reels, plywood reels, and nailed hardwood reels. Continue reading to learn about the different types of packaging available for wire rope and cable.

Coils:

When you are looking to ship shorter lengths of products, coils are an ideal choice. Coils are typically used for cable that is 250 feet or less, and easily stores on your shelf. At Strand Core, we zip tie and place each coil into an identified plastic bag for shipment.

Plastic Reels:

Plastic reels are lightweight and used for smaller sized aircraft cable. However, plastic reels have less durability and strength than wooden reels. We offer multiple colors of plastic reels and recommend that cable diameters at 1/8” or below for these reels.

Plywood Reels:

Plywood reels are one of the most common packaging options. These reels are used on a wide range of sies and constructions. Plywood flanges with cardboard cores reduce overall shipment weight. Plywood reels have plywood flanges with cardboard cores reduce overall shipment weight. Drum and flange ratios are easily customized.

Nailed Hardwood Reels:

The hardwood reels are built of lumber and are extremely sturdy. It is recommended to have wire rope that is 3/8” in diameter or bigger.
